Description

In the Spring of 2016, Dr. Cresawn piloted a Science Outreach in Schools course (CSM 199) for Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Earth Science majors and is targeted to students who are considering or committed to a career in secondary education. In this course, students spent the semester designing a community science night for a local elementary school. The event was open to all students and their families. The JMU students in the course used evidence from the science education literature on best practices in science teaching, early interest in science, impact of informal science experiences, and integration of literacy and cultural relevance for ELLs. The event was held at Spotswood Elementary School in Harrisonburg City. The JMU students mentored 10 local high school students in a collaborative effort to design 8 hands-on/minds-on stations that align with physical and life science VA standards of learning.
