Benefits for Faculty, Students, Community, and Institution

"Last school year the Learning Strategies team had wonderful opportunities to share with the Academic Council and the JMU Board of Visitors the various academic engagements that we create and implement with students, faculty and leaders at JMU. Over the last three years, I have tried to train peer educators to be effective academic coaches. I think what may be a best kept secret is how the LSI team also creates professional development, so the peer educators are current and understand best teaching practices. Except for my GA, all my peer educators are invested in a teaching major at JMU. Using my 20 years of K-12 experience, I try to maximize their experience at JMU by having them read, respond and discuss current articles that not only impact LSI, but also plants seeds for the K-12 arena. Additionally, the LSI workshops and presentations have a direct impact on their ability to discuss evidence-based ideas, greet parents on campus, plan academic sessions with student disabilities in mind, lead team projects and more. The LSI team is amazing just like other JMU teams, but I believe it is very unique in its daily and weekly on the job training experiences."
