Abstract
Inspired by the stressfulness of the pandemic, oK? Magazine invites young adults to get comfortable with topics surrounding mental health. The magazine format, while eye-catching and engaging with rich visuals and graphics, encourages readers to start difficult conversations in their lives. This zine includes four written articles, one photo essay and one visual editorial. The “Bite Sized” section features two short articles- one examining the representation of bipolar disorder in the hit TV show, Empire, and the other listing the benefits of gardening on mental health. “Write Path” includes a personal essay about my experience being raised by a parent with a mental illness. “you okay?” features an interview with a student counselor at North Carolina Central University. We discuss the benefits of therapy, the stigma around mental illness, and how people can start seeking treatment. This magazine is concluded with a photo essay entitled “Comfort Gamble,” which illustrates the agony of a binge eating episode. Mental health is an uncomfortable thing to talk about, but developing an empathic eye allows us to ease into these conversations.
