Abstract

This literacy narrative shares my language improvement and how literacy helped me overcome hardships. I share learning Japanese, hiragana, handwriting, imitating Japanese comedians, comical skits, and kanji as a child. It was like a roller coaster. The reader also engages with my experiences learning English. I began learning English by playing Koko-Pad, an electronic interactive book, and BE-GO, a video game. Both stories of my language acquisition include several comical episodes. Thanks to these experiences, I could learn how to overcome such problems with literacy. This literacy narrative also includes a link to a video created to show the humor in one incident of my digital literacy development as I learned the many dimensions of Microsoft Word. After coming to Soka University of America and reflecting on my entire life, I began to connect the ideas of global citizenship and literacy. Literacy might be just one puzzle “peace.” To complete this global citizenship puzzle may take a lifetime because the pursuit is endless. But I will never give up. In this endeavor, I will study one or more languages to communicate with more people. And I want to pursue some important “peace(s)”: wisdom, courage, and compassion.
