Abstract
My experience of learning multiple languages, including Nepali, English, and Hindi, made me realize how multiliteracy can help to connect with people around the globe. This essay examined how multiliteracy develops compassion, wisdom, and courage that enhance our perspectives about the world, which are critical aspects of global citizenship. Talking to people from all over the world in different languages can help us understand the problems they face and grow kinder and more empathetic. This helps us to build connections among people from different places. I started learning Nepali as my native language and became fluent through continuous encouragement from my mom, my grandfather’s experiences, and my curiosity to learn from different books on religion. Though I was introduced to English in kindergarten, I had difficulty speaking it fluently. However, proficiency in Nepali gave me the foundation to express myself in written English. My continuous effort to learn different languages helped me to overcome my self-doubt and gave me the confidence to communicate with people of different languages. I have reflected on my interaction with Srilankans which developed a new perspective to look into the struggles people face in different parts of the world. I realized that multiliteracy is a tool to create bonds and compassion between human beings. When we learn more languages, we can communicate with more people, which helps us to be more aware of current events occurring in different parts of the world. Through multi-lingual experience, one can foster global understanding.
