Abstract
Two decades of fighting between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army/Movement in southern Sudan ended with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in 2005. The agreement allowed for a referendum, by which residents of southern Sudan voted for independence in July 2011, creating the country of South Sudan.
