Description
Summer 2019 Youth Igniting Change Institute
The Real Me(dia): Representation in Social Media
June 17th-21st
Ice House, James Madison University Room 117 (127 W. Bruce St. Harrisonburg)
Do you know a teen who is interested in exploring the connections between art and social engagement? If so, we hope they will attend the fifth annual Youth Igniting Change Summer Institute! This year participants will focus on understanding their relationship to social media and will analyze its role in identity presentation and representation.
Teens will partner with trained youth workers from JMU’s Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services and the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Youth Council to explore social media and art as a tool for social change. Teens will also examine how social media can amplify both positive and negative narratives of self and other. Collaborating with local artists, they will express their learning through a variety of mediums. On Friday, the final day, youth will present their art projects to family, friends, and the community. Students will also enjoy an art and engagement focused field trip.
Youth Igniting Change is FREE for all participants and is open to rising 9th – 12th graders. Transportation can be provided for participants living in the Harrisonburg/Rockingham area and lunch is provided each day.
