The Impacts of Chronic Illness In Adolescents

Presenter Information

Description

Chronic illness will undeniably affect an individual’s life, whether it is in a positive or negative capacity. The medical care and medical management of these illnesses tend to outweigh other interventions and, unfortunately, sometimes are the only aspects of the student's treatment plan. Students need more than purely medical interventions. Researchers found that deficits in physical, social, and emotional functioning were prevalent in children with chronic illness who were just entering the school system as preschoolers (Bell, Bayliss, Glauert, Harrison & Ohan, 2016). This session aims to raise awareness of the impact chronic illness has on school-aged children and what school counselors can do to help this population. The presenters will discuss the possible issues that a student with a chronic illness may face as well as provide members with suggestions for individualized and system-wide interventions.
