Description

This oral presentation will showcase my own research and results pertaining to the vital role teacher-student relationships play in the learning process. Positive teacher-student relationships have been linked to different types of positive academic, social, and emotional outcomes. In my own creative study, I have used surveys, interviews, and observations of/from teachers, admin, and students. I have identified factors that contribute to positive teacher-student relationships, examined the impact of the relationships on academic performance, investigated what strategies tend to be most effective, and explored the many roles teachers can have that contribute to fostering these healthy teacher-student relationships.

As a student teacher that has been granted the unique opportunity of taking a long-term sub placement, I have had a wonderful chance to research and directly implement my research with my own students and other students at the school. At the same time, I have been able to interview teachers, observe other classrooms, and collect data from students from several different grades. This has been more of a creative research project as I saw a problem and took it upon myself to find a solution that worked extremely well.

Through my research, I discovered that positive teacher-student relationships are essential for student success. Students who feel a connection with their teacher are more likely to attend school, engage in class discussions, and actively participate in learning activities. They are also more likely to have positive attitudes towards school, higher levels of self-esteem, and fewer behavioral problems.

In my study, I used surveys to collect data on student perceptions of their relationships with their teachers, interviews to gain insight into teacher perspectives, and classroom observations to gather information on the interactions between teachers and students. I found that factors such as open communication, respect, and support were critical to building positive relationships. I began showing support for my students by attending extracurriculars they are passionate about, or by allowing some students to eat lunch with me everyday. These are just two of the many strategies I have implemented.

Additionally, I examined the impact of these relationships on academic performance and found that students who had positive relationships with their teachers tended to have higher grades, better attendance, and greater academic motivation. By building relationships with my students, I have been able to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and taking risks.

Overall, my research has demonstrated that positive teacher-student relationships are essential for student success and that teachers can play a critical role in fostering these relationships. This is something I will now always preach as a teacher knowing all of the wonderful benefits and success it brings. I hope that my findings can contribute to the ongoing conversation on the importance of teacher-student relationships and inspire educators to prioritize building strong connections with their students.
