Colleagues from all areas of the higher education landscape are encouraged to share their efforts to create intentional and integrated general education programs, to assess current practices, and to generate evidence of high-quality learning for all students.

The conference themes below reflect the Principles of General Education Maps and Markers (GEMs) developed as part of a nationwide study of foundational purposes of general education programs that advance student learning and preparation.

  • Proficiency
  • Agency and Self-Direction
  • Engaged Pedagogy, Integrative Learning, and Problem-Based Inquiry
  • Equity
  • Intentionality, Transparency, and Assessment

AAC&U strongly prefers proposals that balance conceptual and theoretical frameworks with concrete, pragmatic examples. Proposals that highlight the how and the why of a practice, strategy, or cutting-edge model for achieving integrated and intentional designs for general education are highly recommended. We seek to showcase evidence of quality learning through general education programs. Proposals should address how the work can be adapted at institutions of various types, including community colleges, research-intensive institutions, and minority-serving institutions.
