Description
“Echoes of Shenandoah” for viola and string orchestra was composed in August 2020. As an international student from Ireland, it is important to me to contribute to the artistic body of work for James Madison University and its stunning surroundings. This work was inspired by the fascinating history of the Shenandoah Valley and the many different peoples that have passed through the valley over time. The music is reflective of the beauty and tranquility of the Shenandoah region, and embodies the expansiveness of the valley. This was a collaborative project between JMU DMA violist Aiveen Gallagher and composer Kristian Schembri. The video footage of the Shenandoah National Park was filmed and compiled by both Gallagher and Schembri. Due to COVID-19 and a lack of performance opportunities with a string orchestra, the solo viola line was self-recorded over midi strings.
