Abstract

he recognition of the dual threat of poor management of conventional ammunition in terms of uncontrolled proliferation and devastating explosions has placed the safe and secure management of ammunition (SSMA) ever more firmly on the international political and normative agenda.

Operationally, international cooperation and assistance is stepping up to strengthen national efforts. This heightened attention to the topic makes it ever more judicious and timely to review the state of play in SSMA.

This GICHD report discusses if current practice addresses the challenge at hand and identifies bottlenecks requiring further action to overcome the challenge more effectively, sustainably and in a coordinated manner in the future.
