Abstract
Two thematically linked studies are contained within this dissertation document, completed in partial fulfillment of the degree requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy, per the Communication Sciences and Disorders Ph.D. handbook, and in agreement with an advisory committee. These projects serve to advance the scholarship of teaching and learning in the areas of counseling skill development and therapeutic alliance building. The first study deals with the impact of a university-based caregiver coaching program on SLP graduate students' counseling self-efficacy (CSE) and their perceptions of therapeutic alliances with infant caregivers. A mixed-methods approach was employed utilizing reflexive thematic analysis (RTA) and a paired sample t-test, and the prevailing theme of Building Connections was identified with subthemes identified as Communication, Power dynamics, and Role Establishment with infant caregivers. While clinically significant changes in CSE ratings were noted, lower ratings on specific subscales measuring confidence in more complex counseling and providing emotional support, combined with qualitative findings, underscore the need for focused education in counseling skills for SLPs.
The results of the first study informed the second complementary study. Little is known about the perceived sources of CSE in SLP graduate students. The second study investigated the perceived barriers, facilitators, and missed opportunities encountered by SLP graduate students in developing CSE. A narrative case study was utilized to explore and describe the experiences shaping SLP graduate students’ confidence in counseling. The application of framework analysis revealed the intricacies of these experiences and the factors facilitating or hindering the acquisition of CSE.
