Abstract
In informational masking (IM), random off-frequency background tones degrade pure-tone detections19. Conversely, in stochastic resonance (SR), the addition of some background sounds can enhance detection of a signal15. To our knowledge neither informational masking nor stochastic resonance have been studied in mice. Prepulse inhibition was used to determine the detection of a target signal in various background conditions with stable and variable off-frequencies, and thus the occurrence of IM and SR among wild-type, heterozygous, or mutated homozygous mice for the fractalkine receptor signaling protein (CX3CR1-GFP) thought to be a possible cause of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)5. It was found that IM and SR occur in mice; SR only occurring in mice without the mutation. These findings are consistent with other animal studies of informational masking3, 7 and propose an effect of ASD on central auditory processes.
