Deslenguadas: A Photo Essay on the Performative Remembering of the Impact of 1940s Americanization Programs in Northern New Mexico

Abstract

This photo essay captures the dance performance Deslenguadas by choreographer Yvonne Montoya. Deslenguadas, a dance inspired by a writing of the same name published in Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, is a series of three dances – one duet and two solos. The dances in the series explore the impact the forced loss of the Spanish language had on three generations of one nuevomexicano family from the 1940s to the present day. Through dance, movement, projected animation, and spoken word, the dances explore how each generation internalized racism and shame. At the same time, these generations experienced a profound sense of loss resulting from the trauma endured during the 1940s Americanization programs. These programs corporally punished young elementary-age nuevomexicano students for speaking Spanish. This photo essay includes images of the dances and projections, as well as excerpts of the spoken words shared on stage. It is Yvonne Montoya’s perspective that it is the responsibility of younger generations of nuevomexicanos to remember and heal the linguistic traumas endured by elders just a few generations before. Deslenguadas is an excerpt of the evening-length dance performance Stories from Home. This series of dances is the physical embodiment of the oral traditions of Northern New Mexico by Yvonne Montoya whose maternal family originates from El Rancho in the Pojoaque Valley in Northern New Mexico, the location where the loss of the Spanish language occurred.

Resumen

Este ensayo fotográfico captura el espectáculo de danza Deslenguadas de la coreógrafa Yvonne Montoya. Deslenguadas, una danza inspirada en un escrito del mismo nombre publicado en Borderlands/La Frontera: La Nueva Mestiza de Gloria Anzaldúa, es una serie de tres danzas: un dueto y dos solos. Las danzas de la serie exploran el impacto que la pérdida forzada del español tuvo en tres generaciones de una familia nuevomexicana desde la década de 1940 hasta la actualidad. A través del baile, movimiento, animación proyectada, y poesía escénica, las danzas exploran como cada generación internalizó racismo y vergüenza. Al mismo tiempo, estas generaciones experimentaron un gran sentido de pérdida por el trauma sufrido durante los programas de americanización de 1940. Estos programas castigaban físicamente a jóvenes estudiantes nuevomexicanos de primaria, por hablar español. Este ensayo fotográfico incluye imágenes de los bailes y proyecciones, así como fragmentos de la poesía escénica. Desde la perspectiva de Yvonne Montoya, es responsabilidad de las generaciones más jóvenes de nuevomexicanos, el recordar y sanar los traumas lingüísticos que sufrieron los mayores tan solo unas generaciones antes. Deslenguadas es un fragmento de la obra de danza Stories from Home. Esta serie de danzas encarna físicamente las tradiciones orales del norte de Nuevo México, obra de Yvonne Montoya, cuya familia materna es originaria de El Rancho, en el Valle de Pojoaque, en el norte de Nuevo México, el lugar donde se perdió el español.
