Abstract
¿Ay Latinos? is a public history project that aims to record the experiences and histories of Latino entrepreneurs in the rural Southern city of Harrisonburg. The project consists of four parts: a written portion, an ArcGIS StoryMap, English and Spanish translations of the oral histories and StoryMap, and the oral history interviews themselves. The written portion highlights the long history of Latinos presence in the U.S., the Shenandoah Valley, and Harrisonburg, while also explaining the complexities of Latino identity and documenting the process of recording Latino oral histories. The ArcGIS StoryMap provides an easily digestible overview of the history of Latinos in the U.S., Shenandoah Valley, and city of Harrisonburg, as well as highlighting two Latino-owned businesses. The oral history component focuses on two bilingual interviews that explore aspects of Latino entrepreneurship, such as the importance of familial and community support, as well as the personal histories of the businesses. This project is in collaboration with Histories Along the Blue Ridge webpage where the ArcGIS StoryMap and recommendations for future Latino Oral Histories will be housed.
