Abstract

For my essay titled Bon Appétit, I decided to look back on my memory through a lens of food – something that has shaped not only my identity, but that of my mother and grandmother too. Although food is a mundane thing, a form of sustenance used by every living species, humans have adapted food to satisfy so much more than simply nutrition. I wanted to discover the legacy of food in my own life, and more notably in the lives of notable women in my personal history. In my research, my mother spoke with me about a ‘food-hero’ for her and her own mother, one that got them both interested and confident in cooking in the first place: Julia Child. By interconnecting Julia Child’s role in granting women autonomy in the kitchen, hope in their personal relationships, and a love for french cooking with the passion for cooking instilled in my mother and grandmother, I worked to build a touching narrative of reflection on food and family. This essay looks at the following topics: how food shaped my childhood and memory, how food has been an important tool for women throughout history, Julia Child’s legacy, and the importance of food in a fulfilling life.
